One of the most important factors in creating a great portrait is deciding what to wear. This can make or break your photo session. For photo sessions in our studio, we recommend to bring something casual and something a little more formal, and something just for the fun of it!
Solid colors work well, and can stand the test of time. Try to avoid anything with a lot of patters, like polka dots or stripes. Bright colored clothing can work and is even encouraged. But most importantly, wear something that is comfortable and matches your personality. You may also wear something that shows who you are, like a hat, scarf, or other type of accessory. Another great idea is the use of props that show off an interest of yours, like an instrument or sporting equipment.
For on location photos, choose an outfit that matches the season with both color and style. Warm colors in the fall, like brown and burgundy, cool colors in the winter, like blues and greys, and bright colors in the spring and summer. Remember, depending on the location, it may be difficult to change, so bring accessories can help create diversity in the photos.
For females, we recommend to have your hair and makeup professionally done. But that is totally up to you. If you do your own make-up, try to keep is simple. As the saying goes, less is more. Be sure to bring a comb and/or brush as well. Accessories like hats, scarves, and sunglasses also can add to the shoot. For footwear, we recommend shoes or boots. But again, if you're wearing jeans, sneakers can work. Once you pick out your outfits, look at yourself in the mirror, and ask yourself, "is this the look I want"
For boys and men, we recommend something formal like a tux or suit, or for boys, maybe a polo shirt. something casual like jeans, a T-shirt or casual button shirt, and/or something that he likes to wear often, like a sports jersey.
Next, when your photo shoot is outdoors, neutral colors work well, like browns, blues, tans ect… But it does depend on the season. For example, warm colors in the fall (think autumn leaves), cool colors in the winter, and more vibrant colors in the spring and summer. If you can, new is better than used. (A good excuse to go shopping) Avoid sneakers and white or bright socks.
And the most important advice is to have fun. This is one of the most important events in your life.
If you have any questions regarding what to wear, please don’t hesitate to contact us. You can reach us at (845) 834-3480, or complete our contact form.
We also recommend keeping you outfit simple. Solid colors work best. Try to avoid to many patterns if at all possible. However accessories like ties, handkerchiefs and scarfs can add personality to the photo. And lastly, make sure your clothing is pressed and ironed. We do have a place to change if you want to keep you clothing on a hanger. Below are some examples of business headshots.

]]>In order to make a great family portrait, one of the most important factors is deciding what to wear. Your clothing can make of brake your photo session. Below are some tips to help.
1. Choose a color theme. This can be done in several ways. By wearing all the same color, wearing shades of the same color, or choosing a dominant color and one or two complimentary colors. Take a look at a few photos below. But keep in mind, you can put your own twist to it and wear clothing that's comfortable.
2. Your footwear also plays a key. Shoes and boots work best. Sneakers should only be worn if the go with your outfit, like your wearing jeans and t-shirts. Most importantly, your shoes between each family member should match in color and style. For example, if brown boots are worn, everyone should have some type of brown boot.
3 Clothing should be in the same style. If mom is wearing something formal, the the rest of the family should be formal as well.

We tend to use strong and bright colors, because bright colors grab attention from the thousands of pictures which are taken daily. The stronger the colors used, the louder they shout! And to get your pictures noticed, you must incorporate elements which draw attention to them. Bright colors is one such element. Even though it is a bit conflicting, as photographer usually aim for natural scenery. However, the end result is breathtaking!
In the past wedding photography used be very formal. However, our Hudson Valley Wedding Photographer has brought into play causal weddings, and in good time! With couples getting hitched on the fly, wedding photography has also followed suit. Through our casual wedding photography you get the off the cuff look but with a high level of professionalism!
It is difficult to believe that orientation of photographs can become a trend. But our Hudson Valley Wedding Photographer has proved otherwise! At our photography studio we follow a trend of vertical photographs because it makes it easier for us to capture the flow of pictures. This trend took birth due to smartphones, because every picture you capture is automatically vertical until your turn it sideways. This is huge jump from the DSLR and mirror-less systems which are originally in the horizontal position.
These are only some of the trends we have introduced over time. Our photography techniques and tools make us one of the best photographers in the industry! Have an even you would like us to cover? Contact us today!
]]>Unfortunately, there are actually no set of rules that photographers are required to follow which means there is no guarantee that the quality of work delivered will be what you are looking for. This is exactly why we have compiled a list of tips and tricks that you can follow to hire the best photographer for your special event.
One of the most important aspects when hiring a photographer is to look at the range of expertise they have to offer to you. These can include, wedding shoots, photojournalism, and product photography to name a few. The photographer may use the existing lighting condition or even work in artificial lighting situations.
At the end of the day it all matters on the kind of event you want the photographer to cover. If you are looking for someone who will effectively be able to capture people shots, you might want to go for someone who can work with controlled lighting. You might even require the services of an all-rounder, who will be able to capture everything that you throw at them!
When searching for affordable photographers it is important that you ask family and friend for recommendations. This is one of the easiest ways you can use as you can also ask for their reviews. The recommender can also provide you information about the photographer’s nature and if he/she is the perfect one to hire for your event.
If you want a clear picture of the photographer’s skills you must take a look at the work he/she has done in the past. Even though there are a lot of affordable photographers available, making sure they have the required skills is also very important. Ask the photographer you are considering hiring for their best client work. They may have an online portfolio for instance a social media page or website which you can go through. If you find their skills suitable, you can go ahead and hire them.
There are numerous different photographers who use Photoshop along with Lightroom to enhance their pictures. Be extremely cautious and never fall for this. If affordability is your major concern, go through the list of affordable photographers you have shortlisted and pick the one who has the best skills and who will not go overboard with the use of editing software.
As a client, it is your right to negotiate. Ensure that you negotiate on a price you believe is more than you can afford. However in your search for affordable photographers, do not compromise on the quality. At the end of the day quality pictures is what you are looking for!
]]>So, how do we at Myles Studio take such perfect portrait shots? Following are some tips and tricks that we follow!
Backgrounds play an essential role when it comes to portraits. As a portrait is all about the subject’s face, it is crucial that you choose a background that does not interfere with the subject. A simple and uncluttered background is going to work better when it comes to portraits. Nonetheless, often, surroundings might need to be considered in order to bring out the real personality of the subject.
At our Portrait Photography Studio, we believe that if a photo is captured in natural light, one has the best chance to get an incredibly natural look alongside natural colors as well as skin tones. However, having an outdoor shoot might be tricky, since you may not be able to regulate the light in most circumstances. It is essential to bear in mind that you do not pose the subject right in front of the sun. This might lead to unwanted brightness and deep shadows. If you want to conduct your shoot indoors, ensure that you make use of a soft and evenly distributed light source to light up your subject.
Pose along with the angle of the body as well as face play a critical role in portrait photography. Having your subject look right into the camera without any expression whatsoever can become incredibly boring. Try flaring up your portraits using some sort of a twist! At our Portrait Photography Studio, we believe that this twist can be a sexy smile or an extravagant look to name a few. All one needs to do is experiment with different poses and get shots which look great!
It is important to play around with different apertures to discover the one which suits the shot you are about to take the best. A wider aperture which has a lower number is going to blur the background out, leading to the subject standing out in the shot. A smaller aperture which has a higher number will help the entire scene come into a better focus. Our Portrait Photography Studio recommends using f/2.0 to f/5.0 when it comes to clicking the perfect portraits pictures.
Framing is a photography technique where the photographer draws attention to any one element of the primary subject by framing it with the secondary subject present in the image. Framing provides an image depth and helps draw the eyes to a specific point of interest in the photograph.
Now that we have shared the secrets our Portrait Photography Studio, we hope you will use them too and see a massive difference in your portraits as well!
]]>What all those aspiring to become a fashion photographer fail to understand is the fact that this profession requires a specific set of skills to forge a prosperous career in this field. Fashion photography is not only about using the camera with a somewhat creative flair. Even those who are already in the photography industry sometimes find it extremely difficult to keep up with the demanding nature of this job.
It can become challenging to collaborate with other artists when you do not have photographs to showcase your talents. Before you even begin to contact fashion models, stylists, and makeup artists, start by asking our friends for help. Make sure that you take a lot of fashion themed photographs. Doing this will help the people you approach to decide about working with you.
If you would like to become a fashion photographer looking for inspiration is extremely important. You can go through fashion magazines and websites to help you out. Instagram is also an excellent option. While going through these platforms, carefully study how the photographers have composed their shots, and then try to recreate them.
Photography style is very subjective but, at the same time, significant as well. To find out what your style is, ask yourself about what inspires you the most? Is street fashion photography your calling? Would you instead go for high fashion model photography? Or would you love to create a mishmash of both? There are no right or wrong answers. The key is to choose one and keep working towards perfecting it.
Fashion photography can make or break your chances of working with top models and agonies. If you wish to be taken seriously as a fashion photographer, you must invest in creating a fashion photography website along with a physical portfolio. You ask your family and friends about their recommendation on what should be included in the portfolio and what should be left out. This will help you receive some healthy criticism, which will only help you hone the skills you have!
In today’s highly modern world, you have access to social media platforms, which, when used correctly, can lead to amazing results. Share all your photographs on social media to gain immense exposure. Recently, Instagram has become one of the best platforms where companies look for fresh talent. Harness this power and watch yourself grow in leaps and bounds!
With these tips, you can achieve your dream of becoming a successful fashion photographer!

When doing an engagement photo session, one of the most important factors is deciding what to wear. This can make or break your photo session. Remember, the two of you are taking photos as a couple, so your clothing should reinforce that idea.
Engagement Portrait - Cluett-Schantz Memorial Park, MiltonWearing the same color is one of the easiest ways to coordinate your clothing.
When choosing what to wear, it’s important to coordinate what you wear with each other. One simple way to do that is wearing the same colors. This could be one color or several colors. Another way is having a color theme. In other words at least one color should be consistent between the two of you. And lastly is to have colors that compliment each other. One way to determine which colors work well together is going to a hardware or paint store. They often have color swatches that show you which colors work well together. You can also try wearing shades of the same color. For footwear, we recommend shoes or boots.
Spring Engagement PhotoIn this photo the blue pattern on the brides dress match with the grooms dark blue jeans. His light blue shorts works also because i'ts in the blue family, being just another shade of blue.
Fall engagement photo at Minnewaska State Park inkirhonkson NYThis is an example of a Fall engagement photo. The brown jackets work well together and fit the season.
Summer engagement photoIn this portrait the couples wears all black, ensuring that the definitely go together.
Next, when your photo shoot is outdoors, neutral colors work well, like browns, blues, tans ect… But it does depend on the season. For example, warm colors in the fall,( think autumn leaves) cool colors in the winter, and more vibrant colors in the spring and summer. If you can, new is better than
used. (A good excuse to go shopping) Avoid sneakers and white or bright socks.

Spring Engagement Photo - Vanderbilt MansionBold vibrant colors work well in the spring.
Winter Engagement Photo - Minnewaska State ParkThe cool colors of light blue, dark blue and black work perfect for this winter engagement photo.
Summer Engagement Photo at Minnewaska State Park.Wearing white works well with any season. You can always as bits of color through other items you wear, including, pants, scarves, belts, ect...
For photo shoots in our studio, we recommend to also bring 1 all white or all black outfit. It's also a good idea to bring something casual and something a little more formal. There is one exception for studio photo shoots. Here bright colored clothing can work and is even encouraged. Most importantly, wear something that is comfortable.
Studio Engagement PhotoThis is what we call a low key portrait in Black & White, with the couple wearing black on a black backdrop.
Studio Engagement PhotoWith this in studio session, the blue in the brides dress matches with the blue shits and pants with the groom.
For women, we recommend to have your hair and makeup professionally done. But that is totally up to you. I do have make-up artist I can recommend if you like. If you do your own make-up, try to keep it simple. As the saying goes, less is more. Be sure to bring a comb and/or brush as well.
Last, but not least, bring clothing or items that show your personality. For example, if you like sports, you could wear a jersey, or include items from work, or even a hobby. If you play music, bring your instrument.
Accessories like hats, scarves, and sunglasses also can add to the shoot. You can create props, like signs that say “I Love You”. Be creative and have fun.

An engagement photo shoot is a great way to celebrate your engagement, and your upcoming wedding. It’s a way of telling the world, “I’m getting married”. So how can you make the most of your engagement shoot? There are several important factors: location, clothing, and props.
For location, you will 1st need to decide if you want a studio photo session, or have your session on location. If in studio, then clothing is critical. So you will want to coordinate what you wear to match or compliment each other.
We offer 3 basic types of studio portraits; high key, low key or traditional. With high-key photography, a bright background, usually white, is used, creating a more contemporary feel to the session. With low-key photography, it's the opposite, using a solid black backdrop, creating a more dramatic portrait, while the tradition photo session may use a neutral colored backdrop, often with canvas or muslin backdrops.
High-Key Engagement PhotoThis engagement photo is an example of a high key photo where their clothing compliments each other.
Low Key Engagement PhotoThis engagement photo is an example of a low key photo with the couple wearing all black, creating a very dramatic portrait.
If your engagement photo session is on location, like a park or garden, then you'll need to think about scenery that incorporates your personality. Do you like the country or the city. Do you like the water, or hiking in the mountains. Do you want a location with a rustic feel, or a location with a beautiful garden.
Vanderbilt Mansion In this photo, the gardens at Vanderbilt Mansion make for a beautiful backdrop for this engagement portrait.
Longview ParkLongview Park is a great location that overlooks the Hudson River.
In choosing what to wear, the old saying is true, that less is more. In other words, keep it simple.
For clothing tips, we recommend solid colors. Try to avoid anything with a lot of patterns. ( ie stripes and polka dots) or logos. When your photo shoot is outdoors, neutral colors work well, like browns, blues, tans ect… But it does depend on the season. For example, warm colors in the fall,( think autumn leaves) cool colors in the winter, and more vibrant colors in the spring and summer. If you can, new is better than used. (A good excuse to go shopping) Avoid sneakers and white or bright socks. Try to coordinate your clothing by wearing the same color, shades of the same color, or colors that compliment each other. (see example photos below) A tip for choosing a color scheme is to go to a paint store, and look at their color swatches that show you what colors go together. (You can also Google it) For footwear, we recommend shoes or boots.
Also, try to match what you wear with the time of year. So sweater and jackets for the cooler months in Fall and Winter. And dresses, jeans and shorts for spring and summer. Colors should also match with the season. Cool colors in the winter like whites, blues, and grey's, warm colors in the fall, like browns, burgundy's, and deep oranges. Bright colors in spring and summer, using yellows, reds, and purples (think flowers).
Fall engagement photo at Minnewaska State Park inkirhonkson NYSebastian & Katie had their engagement photos taken at Minnewaska State Park, in the Fall.
Locust GroveAn example of a Fall engagement photo. Here the couple is wearing sweaters of olive green and tan the match each other, as well as blue jeans with brown boots and shoes.
It’s always fun to bring props to your photo shoot. What are props you may ask? Props are personal items that somehow speak to your relationship with your fiance; or tell a little about who you are. It can something as small as sunglasses because you like to go to the beach, or something as big as a fire truck, because your in the fire department. Maybe you like sports, so you could bring a football, or even wear a baseball jersey. Often times, couples will bring chalkboards or create signs that may have a love quote, or a fun saying. Contact us if you need suggestions. With props you can really make the session your own.
Fireman's Engagement Photo. An example of an engagement photo with a firetruck as the prop, along with the fireman's gear to really make it authentic.
Engagement IdeasTaking photos with your pet often add that special touch to your photo, along with a save-the-date sign.
Engagement photo with "I said yes" signA example the an engagement photo using an "I said yes" sign as a prop for their portrait.
One extra tip. Choose the right photographer. Whether we take your engagement photos, or your wedding photos, we’ll help create an atmosphere for you to have fun, and to enjoy the experience, as well as the photos. I hope this photography blog helps you when you plan for your engagement photos. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
We congratulate you on your engagement. I hope and pray you'll have many years of happiness, as you begin your lives together.
Thank you. Myles C Pinkney - Photographer

We have photographed a lot of kids over the years and we like to think that we do it rather well.
One of the things our photographers have learned is how to make youngsters feel relaxed.
Every age is distinct and every infant is different. Some will come bursting in looking forward to seeing you, ready for anything. Others might be a little more reserved and need some coaxing.
We will meet them at their level, chatting with them about what they like, what they have been doing, and generally getting them more comfortable.
If it means playing about and acting the idiot we can do that. If it means taking everything a little slower and quieter then we can do that too.
For the first part of the shoot we usually photograph your child using a variety of props from cute teddy bears to soft cushiony blankets. This helps them feel more comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Pretty soon they will be happy and relaxed and up for the full sitting.
Parents are always welcomed and can interact with their child during the photography shoot.
We know it works because so many parents love the photos of their children so much they often bring their children back.

When it comes to finding a venue for your wedding reception the possibilities are endless, which can become overwhelming at times. With so many options, how does a couple find the perfect venue? We're glad you asked! Here are a steps to help you make an informed decision with less anxiety.
After discussing the top three questions with your spouse-to-be, it's time for phase two:

Have you thought about giving back on your wedding day? One of the great things about living in the Hudson Valley is that you can always find a stunning wedding venue that is on the water. The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls is one of them. As the name states, this building has a great view of the Beacon Falls; and let's face it... who doesn't want to get a picture taken in front of a waterfall? Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in a lot of light and gives the space an airy and open feel. There is also a wrap-around terrace and plenty of space to dance. Check out more photos below of this beautiful location and the lovely couple we had the privilege of photographing.

This wedding was held at the beautiful and historic Locust Grove estate, also known as the Samuel F. B. Morse house, located in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Locust Grove is somewhat of a hidden gem in Poughkeepsie. It's scenic landscape makes it a great spot for spring, summer, and fall weddings. Just imagine how gorgeous it must be when autumn arrives and the leaves start changing. Nothing beats New York during the fall. Check out more photos from this location below.
The sunlight made the reception room glow.
Have you ever visited Locust Grove? If not you should go see it if your ever in Poughkeepsie.

One thing I love about photographing weddings is the spontaneity of young children throughout the day. Wether the ring bearer tries to make a getaway with the rings in hand or the flower girl steals the spotlight on an empty dance floor, children always find a way to bring a smile to the face of every guest at the wedding. Here's a handful of images that will surely brighten your day.

Plans and lists make a wedding run smoothly. Unfortunately, we all know that things rarely go according to plan; including weddings. From an unexpected blizzard the night before the wedding (this happened to our daughter....no joke) to forgetting a pair of comfy shoes to dance the night away, what do we do to prepare for the bump in the road that's bound to come? We create a backup plan!
Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY
1. Delegate:
2. Appoint backups
3. Talk to the people/vendors in charge before the event takes place
If you don't have a wedding planner than talk to a trusted family member or a member of your bridal party about your wedding day plans. Brainstorm back up plans with that person and let them know what should be done if changes needed to be made.
If you have any special guests or speakers at the reception, be sure to give a list of those names to the DJ beforehand.
The most important thing to remember is to take everything in stride. If plans have to change there are people around you who can help you figure out an alternative plan of action. It's your day and should be as stress free as possible.

Traditional photographers emphasize classically arranged group portraits, and probably have a standard group of shots that they take at every wedding. The work of good traditional photographer is beautiful, but because their process is timely, and their method painstaking, some couples find traditional portraits dull and slow-moving.
Photo Journalists take a different approach - they document your wedding day without interacting with it. This is perfect for couples who want completely candid coverage, and who naturally look perfect in every image. The downside of this is that without some direction, many of the people in your wedding pictures might be talking (or even eating), and unless you’re extremely photogenic, you may not like the way you appear in these types of images.
Most wedding photographers call themselves photo journalists, not because they have a background as a war correspondent (they probably don’t), but because documenting a day without interaction requires very little experience or training. Great photo journalists are masters with their cameras, and almost never miss a shot, but beware of novice wedding shooters who may not have the skills needed for your wedding day.
Artistic photographers capture the beauty available at weddings, and often create exceptional images from flowers, table settings, and other details at your wedding. Their angles are often unusual, which yields some dramatic and unconventional pictures, though you may not want all the images.
Contemporary photographers attempt to blend the best of the above styles with a faster pace. If they’re skilled, they can handle, arrange, and group shots quickly, blend in with your guests at the reception, and capture creative detail shots throughout the day, giving you the best of all the styles. When they’re unskilled, you’ll get the worst of all the styles. Contemporary photographers may also describe themselves as fun, but unless you like their personality that might just be a marketing word.
There are pros and cons to each of these approaches, and you’re likely to meet photographers from all of the styles mentioned. There are less traditional photographers working weddings now, at least partially because it can take years to learn posing techniques, and become a master with lighting, but also because there are less couples wanting to be heavily posed and manipulated on their wedding day.
Some couples know right away what style of photographer they want, while others won’t know what they want until they see it. This is totally fine. Any photographer you interview should be able to show you dozens of weddings they’ve shot, so that you can develop a good idea about the type of images you’ll have from your wedding.
And remember - this is a fun choice to make! Don’t get stressed out about the labels - just look at a lot of portfolios, and you’ll develop a feel for how you want your wedding pictures to look.

Okay after months of searching you finally found the perfect wedding vendor, now what? Well, first things first you need to get the details of the services that will be provided by the vendor -- to you -- in a written contract. Yes - A CONTRACT IS A MUST with every wedding vendor. If a vendor suggests not having a contract RUN, run as fast as you can. They're not legit. Any respectful vendor will not have you as a client unless you sign a contract.
Make sure you cover all the necessary details in your contract. Your contracts should include:
1. Company’s name, address, and phone number
2. Bride & Grooms Name, Addresses, and phone numbers
3. Date and time of the Wedding
4. Services and/or products you will be receiving
a. With the bakery and florist make sure included in the contract is information about delivery, set-up, and repair. (Cakes can get damaged in transport)
b. Special requests should be noted somewhere on the contract. This is especially important when working with DJs, and Catering Halls.
5. Name of person(s) performing services
a. This is extremely important when dealing with larger DJ or Photography Companies
6. Products that will be delivered after the event and the timeline the products will be delivered by
a. This is especially important for videography services and photographic services.
7. Cost of Services and Deposit
a. If any of these costs are nonrefundable it should be noted.
b. Each item should be listed and the cost associated with it.
c. If receiving a package, package items should be listed in detail.
8. Payment schedule should be listed in detail, including forms of payment acceptable, and applicable penalties (for example, if a personal check is returned.)
9. Alternative service or merchandise in case of a problem.
Remember that a contract is a legal and binding agreement between you and your vendor. Therefore, be careful and read the fine print. If there is anything that is missing from the contract and you wish for it to be added, don't hesitate to speak up; it's your hard earned money. Make sure the contract has two signatures: yours and a legal representative from the vendor's organization. Don't leave without having a signed copy for yourself.
One more thing, as extra protection you could always pay for your services with a credit card. That way you have a means to dispute any erroneous charges.

Weddings are all about detail. From the flavor of the cake to what flowers will be used for the bouquets. It's these details that make a couples personality shine through. Here's where the props come into play. Props are used in theatre, presentations, and commercials, but it's one detail that is often overlooked when it comes to weddings.
Something as simple as old school hats or new sneakers can break up the tradition of the black tux.
Are you a baseball fanatic? Why not use some sports accessories?
Using handmade signs adds a touch of humor and playfulness.
Or you can go big and show off a few of your treasured toys.
How bout it? Are you thinking about using a prop or two to jazz up your wedding day?
*Edited to add: Supplies to make props can be found in craft supply stores, such as Michael's, JoAnn Fabrics, or Hobby Lobby. Ready made props (as well as supplies to decorate props) can also be found on Etsy, a collection of online shops for vintage and handmade objects . If you want a more mix-matched feel, hit up your local thrift shop or flea market to see what hidden treasures you can make your own.

MISTAKE #1 – Picking a Photographer Based on Price $$.
The saying is true. “You get what you pay for.” This is especially true in the photography industry. If you want good photography, you should decide to work with a photographer because of the overall value you receive, NOT because they are the lowest priced.
Here’s why . . . Value = Quality + Service + Price
It is impossible for any company in any industry to offer the cheapest price, have the highest quality, and provide the best service all at the same time. You can get high quality and super service, but you can’t get both and still get the lowest price.
Just like in any business, you would hire the best people and buy the highest quality product – consequently, you have to charge more for your services.
Total value is all three. Quality, Service and Price!
The most common problems YOU WILL have when you pick a photographer who only offers the lowest price are:
1. Dirt cheap photographers don’t stand behind their work. If they make a mistake or worse yet, ruin all the pictures, then the problem is beyond fixable. Or you may have pictures that are okay, but you hoped for more. In that case, there isn’t a lot they can do. The end result is you get what you pay for. A little money saved up front can cost big in the end. There’s a little saying “What cost are you really paying for - photographs you don’t like?”
2. The second problem with a photographer who offers the lowest price is they tend to also offer the lowest quality. Your wedding photos are one of your most important and valuable investments you will make in your lifetime. The value you place on choosing the right photographer will show for many years. It is a long term investment. Why risk so much and throw away such great memories for a few pennies saved up front?
3. And the third reason why hiring the cheapest photographer is a problem is that you may have to sort through the proofs yourself and insert them in an album so your family and friends can look at them. A lot of times, if you want an album, they either charge you extra for that service or they may not even offer that service at all. Cheap photographers do not offer beginning to end service.
To avoid buying on price alone we suggest you choose two or three photographers and rank them in the order that is important to you such as Quality first, Service second, and Price last. AND ONCE YOU FIND A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER . . . STICK WITH THEM! You’ll be glad you did and you will have peace of mind in doing so.
MISTAKE #2 – You think all photographers are the same.
Every photographer is different. No two are really the same. Every photographer has different equipment and has different skills, abilities, and most importantly different style. They also have different employees that all bring a complete mix of abilities to their product.
Photography is art and craftsmanship combined. Most people who hire photographers don’t truly understand that despite all the technological advances being made, photographers still use the same quality work habits and techniques as they did 25 - 30 years ago.
Contrary to what a lot of people think, photography is not just picking up a camera and clicking the shutter. It takes craftsmanship to turn out quality work.
Photographers have to know how to capture the right moment, how to compose properly, how to expose properly, how to use light, shape and form in order to get the most flattering and artistic results and poses.
Communication is the key to hiring the best photographer for YOU!
• Ask what style of work they do – ask to see some samples.
• Ask to see the wedding contract. Some will make big promises and do something else – because their contract backs them up.
• Ask to see samples from recent weddings.
• Ask them who will be photographing your wedding.
• Ask them how long it will take to see the images AFTER the wedding.
• Ask them if they retouch or enhance the final images.
• Ask them what it will cost and exactly what do you get – how many images are included.
• Ask them how many weddings they’ve photographed.
• Ask them (this is a good one) what their philosophy is on wedding photography.
Wedding photography is not a generic product. Ask these and other relevant questions and it will become obvious who the right choice will be for you. You will notice a marked difference in attitude, quality, creativity and experience. Remember, this is your special day. Do you want to hire an amateur to take experimental photos or a pro who will create a masterpiece?
MISTAKE #3 – You have several photographers competing with each other for your work.
You may think this is a good way to do business. And it is to some extent. But here is why it usually isn’t a good way to deal with photographers. A good photographer has enough loyal customers that they don’t have to deal with price shoppers.
Once you find a good photographer it is important to stay loyal to them. If you flip-flop, most photographers won’t be motivated to keep YOU as a customer.
Price is important. But price should not be more important than good quality and good service. This is what some people like to do. They try and get everyone fighting for the same piece of pie. This might be an OK short term strategy because you save a few bucks. But, when you need a favor, or super fast service – not one of these photographers will bend over backwards to help you. (And if you have been a price shopper in the past, they probably will charge you more!)
Every photographer expects to bend over backwards for their clients every now and again. Provided the customer is loyal, the photographer will do all he can to help. All good photographers are loyal to you if YOU are loyal to them.
MISTAKE #4 – You think having the right equipment is all a photographer needs to do the job right!
Many photographers own wonderful equipment. However, that doesn’t mean they know how to use it properly. You can have all the “latest greatest whiz bang lenses and digital wonder cameras,” but if you don’t know how to use it properly, you are no better off than anyone picking up a camera and pointing and shooting.
Compare this to your cell phone. Studies show that half the people who own cell phones don’t even know how to program speed dial, let alone the more advanced features. The same thing happens in the photography industry. Many photographers have tools that have a lot of bells and whistles, but if the photographer has little or no technical and creative know how, he may as well be from fifty years ago.
Make sure the photographer knows how to use his tools to the very best of their capabilities. You risk not only pictures that could have been outstanding, but worse, yet, utter let-down because of lack of technical knowhow.
MISTAKE #5 – You don’t give the photographer enough time to get the job done properly!
Mistakes happen when you rush!
Or when there are not enough instructions. You concentrate so much on getting all the details organized; you forget to tell the photographer.
Be organized! Be organized! Be organized! And communicate all the details to your photographer, and also let him know any special needs, shots, or relevant details so you will not be let down.
Before the wedding, get them involved. Let them know what your hopes, dreams and plans are. Who knows, he may have some really cool ideas that might just thrill you, or some useful tips on making sure your plans go smoothly.
You can save time, money and headaches from the very beginning by communicating with your photographer. You should think of your photographer as one of your wedding planners. Consult with your photographer.
The time you start looking for your photographer is also an important consideration. You can’t expect very many good ones to be available if you start shopping only a few months before your big day. Most of the better ones are booked way ahead of that, often a year in advance.
MISTAKE #6 – You hire an amateur, friend or relative, or unqualified photographer and expect top-notch wedding photographs.
You may have seen a top notch wedding photographer in action at the wedding of a friend or relative. A really good wedding photographer makes it look so easy, almost effortless. There is a very simple reason for this. Experience.
The biggest mistake any bride can make is asking a friend or relative to capture their day and when the results are not there, the responsibility and ill feelings can be crushing. Most, if not all, untrained wedding photographers simply cannot handle the stress and responsibility that goes along with capturing a wedding. The pace, the stress and the speed is way too much for them, let alone being creative.
There is nothing wrong with hiring an amateur, as long as you have realistic expectations, and know you are going to be getting amateurish photographs. Even a professional photographer in a different field such as commercial photography will have a rough go of photographing weddings. Weddings are tough. Bottom line. And the only thing that makes it flow and seem almost effortless is experience. Do you want to give your photographer the opportunity to practice on your wedding?
Or do you want someone who is so qualified they can handle anything that is thrown at them and they come through at the end with dynamic pictures?
Of course a photographer can’t guarantee wedding pictures because of the very nature of weddings. A wedding is an event. Once your wedding is over, it’s over. You have your photographs as your memories, so ruined photos won’t matter much even if you get all your money back.
MISTAKE #7 – You don’t ask for references.
This is easy to solve. You can ask the photographer for actual names and ask to see actual samples from recent weddings, but let’s face it; this is almost too embarrassing for most of us to do. There is an easier way. All you have to do is ask around.
So, there you have it. I hope that if you made it this far, you will have learned something in your quest to finding the right photographer for you.
This is the easiest way you can hire the best photographer for YOU!
