Tips for a successful engagement shoot.
An engagement photo shoot is a great way to celebrate your engagement, and your upcoming wedding. It’s a way of telling the world, “I’m getting married”. So how can you make the most of your engagement shoot? There are several important factors: location, clothing, and props.
For location, you will 1st need to decide if you want a studio photo session, or have your session on location. If in studio, then clothing is critical. So you will want to coordinate what you wear to match or compliment each other.
When choosing what to wear, it’s important to coordinate what you wear with each other. One simple way to do that is wearing the same colors. This could be one color or several colors. Another way is having a color theme. In other words at least one color should be consistent between the two of you. And lastly is to have colors that compliment each other. One way to determine which colors work well together is going to a hardware or paint store. They often have color swatches that show you which colors work well together. You can also try wearing shades of the same color. For footwear, we recommend shoes or boots. Of course, if your wears jeans and a T-shirt, sneakers would work, but they should still match.
Also important is the background. We offer 4 basic types of studio portraits; high key, low key, scenic or abstract. With high-key photography, a bright background, usually white, is used, creating a more contemporary feel to the session. With low-key photography, it's the opposite, using a solid black backdrop, creating a more dramatic portrait. Scenic portrait can have a nature theme or architectural theme, like a meadow or living room interior. Abstract backgrounds come in a variety of textures and color. They may even combine colors. I lie using this type because the focus in now on you, not the background.
I like to choose your background based on the colors your wearing, but if you have a preference, please let us know. Below are samples of both studio and on-location settings.

Low Key Engagement PhotoThis engagement photo is an example of a low key photo with the couple wearing all black, creating a very dramatic portrait.
If your engagement photo session is on location, like a park or garden, then you'll need to think about scenery that incorporates your personality. Do you like the country or the city. Do you like the water, or hiking in the mountains. Do you want a location with a rustic feel, or a location with a beautiful garden.
Also, try to match what you wear with the time of year. So sweater and jackets for the cooler months in Fall and Winter. And dresses, jeans and shorts for spring and summer. Colors should also match with the season. Cool colors in the winter like whites, blues, and grey's, warm colors in the fall, like browns, burgundy's, and deep oranges. Bright colors in spring and summer, using yellows, reds, and purples (think flowers).

It’s always fun to bring props to your photo shoot. What are props you may ask? Props are personal items that somehow speak to your relationship with your fiancé, or tell a little about who you are as a couple. It can something as small as sunglasses because you like to go to the beach, or something as big as a fire truck, because your in the fire department. Maybe you like sports, so you could bring a football, or even wear a baseball jersey. Often times, couples will bring chalkboards or create signs that may have a love quote, or a fun saying. When doing an engagement photo session, there are several factors to consider. Like should it be on location or in a studio. If on location, then what location works best. Also important is the time of year. Were you thinking about a session in the spring, summer, fall or winter. Do you like being outdoors, or would you rather have the comfort of a studio session.

Next, when your photo shoot is outdoors, neutral colors work well, like browns, blues, tans ect… But it does depend on the season. For example, warm colors in the fall,( think autumn leaves) cool colors in the winter, and more vibrant colors in the spring and summer. If you can, new is better than
used. (A good excuse to go shopping) Avoid sneakers and white or bright socks, unless that's the look your going for. (Ex, T-shirt, sneakers and jeans)

For photo shoots in our studio, we recommend to also bring 1 all white or all black outfit. It's also a good idea to bring something casual and something a little more formal. There is one exception for studio photo shoots. Here bright colored clothing can work and is even encouraged. Most importantly, wear something that is comfortable.

For women, we also recommend having your hair and makeup professionally done. But that is totally up to you. I do have make-up artist I can recommend if you like. If you do your own make-up, try to keep it simple. As the saying goes, less is more. Be sure to bring a comb and/or brush as well. Accessories like hats, scarves, and sunglasses also can add to the shoot. You can also bring props, like signs that say “I Love You”.
Lastly, a few more tidbits to help provide a successful session. Make sure clothing is clean and pressed. Also, make sure to try them on to make sure they fit correctly, especially if items are new. We recommend bringing a hair brush or comb, lip gloss for the ladies and lotion. And don’t forget you hands, because they may appear in the photos ( nail polish freshly done or removed, not chipped) And if at all possible, have it coordinate with your outfit.

What to Wear for a Family Portrait
Family portraits are so special. A great portrait can stay in the family for generations. At Myles Studio Photography we know that your family means everything to you. You laugh together, cry together, take vacations together. Your love for each other is endless. That's why we want to make sure we help to create a family portrait that shows who you are as a family, while also making sure you look your best. Whether your a family of 2 or 20, with multiple generations, it's my job to bring out the best in you.
In order to make a great family portrait, one of the most important factors is deciding what to wear. Your clothing can make of brake your photo session. Below are some tips to help.
1. Choose a color theme. This can be done in several ways. By wearing all the same color, wearing shades of the same color, or choosing a dominant color and one or two complimentary colors. Take a look at a few photos below. But keep in mind, you can put your own twist on it.
2. Your footwear also plays a key. Shoes and boots work best. Sneakers should only be worn if compliment your outfit, like your wearing jeans and t-shirts. Most importantly, your shoes between each family member should match in color and style. For example, if brown boots are worn, everyone should have some type of brown boot.
3 Clothing should be in the same style. If mom is wearing something formal, the the rest of the family should be formal as well.
4. This is a fun tip. Bring props if you like. For example, everyone in caps, or everyone wearing sun glasses. Use your imagination.
5. Last but not least, wear clothing that is comfortable.

What to Wear for Your Senior or Graduation Portrait
At Myles Studio Photography, it is my number one goal to bring out the best in you, creating photos that look natural and capture your personality.
One of the most important factors in creating a great portrait is deciding what to wear. This can make or break your photo session. For photo sessions in our studio, we recommend to bring something casual and something a little more formal, and something just for the fun of it!
Solid colors work well, and can stand the test of time. Try to avoid anything with a lot of patters, like polka dots or stripes. Bright colored clothing can work and is even encouraged. But most importantly, wear something that is comfortable and matches your personality. You may also wear something that shows who you are, like a hat, scarf, or other type of accessory. Another great idea is the use of props that show off an interest of yours, like an instrument or sporting equipment.
For on location photos, choose an outfit that matches the season with both color and style. Warm colors in the fall, like brown and burgundy, cool colors in the winter, like blues and greys, and bright colors in the spring and summer. Remember, depending on the location, it may be difficult to change, so bring accessories can help create diversity in the photos.

Tips for a Successful Business Headshot
There are several factors that make for a successful business headshot. First is deciding what to wear. Deciding what to wear for headshot can be more difficult than meets the eye. Whether your headshot is for business, acting, modeling, or even a simple profile photo on Linkedin, your headshot is often times a potential client or employers 1st impression of you. So it's important that you look approachable, but not fake, and that your outfit matches your profession. So for a corporate photo a jacket and tie for males and a professional jacket or blazer for females often works well. But if you work a blue collar profession, then try an outfit that represents your line of work. If you work in a creative field, then wear something that show your creativity.
We also recommend keeping you outfit simple. Solid colors work best. Try to avoid too many patterns if at all possible. However accessories like ties, handkerchiefs and scarfs can add personality to the photo. And lastly, make sure your clothing is pressed and ironed. We do have a place to change if you want change at my studio. Below are some examples of our headshots.
Other considerations for a professional headshot is making sure your hairstyle matches your wardrobe, and that it reflect how you would look in the workplace, school, or profession. If wearing make-up, don't overdo it, especially if you usually don't wear make-up. We do recommend having your hair and make-up professionally done if your not comfortable doing your own. Sometimes your hands may be included in the photo, so nails should be clean and/or polished. For men we recommend being clean shaven, and hair combed. (you'll be surprised how many men don't think about that)
And lastly, get a good night sleep before the session, and drink plenty of water. So the day of the session, you can relax and have fun.
One last extra tip. Be sure to bring a comb or hairbrush, lotion and lip balm. Sometimes dry hands or lips can take away for your portrait.
